PITTSBURGH - Former University of Pittsburgh standout and NFL All-Pro defensive back Darrelle Revis has retired from the NFL after 11 seasons.

Revis made the announcement and said on Twitter, "Today I am closing a chapter in my life that I once dreamed of as a kid and I am officially retiring from the National Football League."

Revis was a product of powerhouse Pennsylvania high school football program Aliquippa.

He then brought his talents to the University of Pittsburgh, where he was a freshman All-American and two-time First Team Big East performer.

Revis entered the NFL draft after his junior season and was selected 14th overall by the New York Jets.

From there, Revis became the premier shutdown cornerback in the game and made the Pro Bowl seven times in an eight-year span.

During his prime, Revis was known for shutting down the opposing team's top receiver to the point where no balls were thrown in his direction, which led to his area on the field being dubbed "Revis Island."
