Special election scheduled after resignation of U.S. Rep. Tom Marino

Last week's surprising resignation of an area congressman now has the counties in his district awaiting a decision on a special election date to fill the seat.

The Centre County commissioners are joining other county administrators in the 12th Congressional District to set the special election on May 21 -- the same day as the spring primary election.

The special election is due to the sudden resignation of U.S. Rep. Tom Marino, R-Pa.

County leaders said holding both elections on the same day will save taxpayers money

So far, the only candidate in the 12th District special election is the Democrat who lost to Marino last year -- Marc Friedenberg.

The 66-year-old Marino is a former county and federal prosecutor who co-chaired Donald Trump's successful presidential campaign in Pennsylvania.

He easily won re-election in November to his heavily Republican district in northern Pennsylvania.
